A meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has begun in Indonesia.
This is the first face-to-face meeting between the two foreign ministers since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine began, and it seems that opinions have been exchanged over US-China relations, the situation in Ukraine, and Taiwan.
The meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi began in Bali, Indonesia, after 10:30 am on the 9th of Japan time.
Prior to the meeting, Secretary Blinken said, “The relationship between the United States and China is complex and important. We look forward to a productive and constructive meeting.”
On the other hand, Foreign Minister Wang said, “China and the United States need to maintain normal exchanges as a great power. It is necessary for both countries to make efforts to restore the relationship between the two countries to a normal trajectory.”
This is the first time the two foreign ministers have met face-to-face since October last year, and this is the first time since Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine began in February.
At the meeting, it seems that opinions are being exchanged to avoid accidental conflicts as the conflict between the United States and China intensifies in the Indo-Pacific region.
It is also believed that discussions are being held on the situation in Ukraine, where Russia’s military invasion is prolonged, and Taiwan.
In the latter half of the year, while the United States is refraining from holding a midterm election and China is refraining from holding a Communist Party convention, it is expected that both will strengthen their stance of emphasizing the domestic political situation, and President Biden has indicated his intention to hold it soon. Attention is also being paid to what kind of adjustments will be made toward the summit meeting.
